In April 2002, Botswana Life removed the HIV exclusion clause from the contract wording of its entire Mompati product range, which has paid out over P300 million in benefits since its launch in 1994. Two sets of universal life programme rates are now available and customers who elect to have an HIV test enjoy significantly lower premium options. Customers who become HIV positive after taking out the policy are fully covered. In the review period, this model proved most successfull, with an increased number of customers electing the testing option and benefiting from reduced premiums. There is a strong public appreciation for Botswana Life's approach of personal risk management for "life event financial needs".
